Prof. Emmerson specializes in comparative politics, especially Southeast Asia on which he has published many articles and several books. His research interests include Indonesian politics and foreign policy, Asian-Pacific regionalism and democracy, and the “Asian values” debate. 

Prof. Emmerson has taught courses on Southeast Asia in East Asian Studies, International Policy Studies, and Political Science at Stanford University.
